Indications/Uses
Moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & elderly 20 mg once daily. Initially, 5 mg once daily for the 1st wk then increase to 10 mg once daily on 2nd wk & to 15 mg on 3rd wk. From 4th wk & beyond, dose is adjusted to 20 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of epileptic seizures, recent MI experience, CHF, uncontrolled HTN, renal impairment; patient taking amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan, other NMDA-antagonists. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, sleepiness, constipation, elevated liver function test, dizziness, balance disorders, shortness of breath, high BP & drug hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions
Amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan; dantrolene, baclofen; cimetidine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, quinine, nicotine; hydrochlorothiazide (or any in combination w/ hydrochlorothiazide), anticholinergics, anticonvulsants, barbiturates, dopaminergic agonists, neuroleptics, oral anticoagulants.
